I was invited on the SogieCon True Colors field trip as part of Looking In Theater. I decided to
go on the trip because I thought it sounded like fun, and it was! The con included many different
presentations, markets, and people. Beginning in the Jorgensen Theater at UConn, it started with many
speakers, most with history in supporting the LGBTQ+ community. After that, I chose to go to a
presentation of the history of drag, presented by two drag queens themselves. The event
continued similarly, with showcases of queer history and enough free time in between them to
get food and shop at the indoor marketplace, where one could purchase flags, pins, and stickers, all with messages of pride on them.
We were encouraged to wear colorful outfits, and many
of us including myself did. The students from the other schools were so kind, and I got at least a
dozen compliments on my outfit and handed out a dozen others! This convention was important to me
because it was a place queer kids could go to feel seen, make friends, or just learn more about
queer culture. Especially at the end, when there were mics open to students at the Jorgensen,
and I heard so many inspiring and heartwarming stories from queer kids in high and middle
school. I loved this field trip and think it’s a very important event!
