What kind of teacher would wear shorts in the dead of winter?! A first-place performer, that’s who! The person in question is Ms. Gemetta Neil-Goulet, or more affectionately known as Ms. G. to her students. She is well known around the building and CREC Central for her commitment to project-based learning. She wants you all to know about what her students have been up to this year!
In October of this year, Ms. G’s 9th grade classes studied the impact of social media on mental health and self-image. They created poster boards with information about everything they learned, and traveled to the Learning Corridor to present their findings to another CREC school: the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering.
The upperclassmen are also busy toiling away in her ECE Urban Health Class! Over the course of several months, they put together information to present at a mental health gallery walk. Each group focused on a specific mental health issue: depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and PTSD. After a good deal of research, they created trifold boards and pamphlets discussing the effects, causes, and implications of these mental health issues on urban communities. She even had professional speakers from Yale and other universities come and speak to her students during this gallery walk.
Their presentation was so successful that they (especially Biggie) were invited back to AAE to give the presentation to more 8th and 9th graders. When asked, Ms. G said “This was a first-ever collaborative event, and the feedback we received about the event and the students was so positive.” Let’s congratulate them!
