What do you teach? Since you are a fairly new teacher at GHAA, why did you choose to work here? Did anything about GHAA surprise you?
I teach creative writing, my favorite class to teach is slam poetry. I’m a PhD student so I don’t have a lot of free time. Teaching at GHAA fits well into my schedule. One thing that surprised me about GHAA is how confident and self-assured all the students are. I didn’t feel that way when I was in high school, and the positivity in all the students makes the school an oasis.
What’s your main medium?
Writing and 2D visual art are my main mediums. I’m spending a lot of time working on my dissertation right now, but besides that, watercolors and drawing are my favorite.
Can you tell us anything about your collaboration with Thomas’ A3 class? What are the benefits of involving students with different artistic interests in projects like this?
I feel like everyone already knows what the show is, but I still can’t say anything about it. Thomas is one of my greatest friends in this building and he’s so much fun to work with. He has so many great ideas. It’s really awesome to be part of an art form that isn’t my usual field. We can offer a different perspective and bring a critical writing side to the show to analyze the characters further.
You’ve shared some of your experiences in grad school with your students. What are you working on? Are you going to continue teaching at GHAA when you get your doctorate? If not, what are your plans?
I’m in a philosophy and art theory program. There’s a lot of travel for it, which is very interesting as I can get outside just the New York and Northeast lens. Will I stay at GHAA? I hope to stay at GHAA when I get my PhD. I’ll definitely still teach and be in an academic setting, but I don’t know if that will be at GHAA.
